Oregon-Based Food Manufacturing Company — Purchasing Manager

SUMMARY

Coordinates activities involved with procuring goods and services such as raw materials, packaging, and supplies and assists the management of freight by performing the following duties. You will have a purchasing assistant to help upkeep current orders, as well as be your eyes on the warehouse floor. The main goal of this position is to secure new products and negotiate better pricing.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Responsible to support all HACCP, Food Safety, Food Defense regulations and programs by participating as a member of the HACCP Team. Provides information and supports the supplier approval procedure.

  • Reviews requisitions. Confers with vendors to obtain product or service information such as price, availability, and delivery schedule.

  • Selects products for purchase by testing, observing, or examining items. Estimates values according to knowledge of market price.

  • Determines method of procurement such as direct purchase or bid. Prepares and issues purchase orders or bid requests.

  • Reviews bid proposals and negotiates contracts within budgetary limitations and scope of authority.

  • Maintains procurement records such as items or services purchased, costs, delivery, product quality or performance, and inventories.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Discusses defective or unacceptable goods or services with inspection or quality control personnel, users, vendors, and others to determine source of trouble and take corrective action.

  • Approves invoices for payment for items purchased.

  • Locates new sources of supply as necessary and keeps abreast of changing market conditions.

  • Enters inventory counts in Navision and evaluates inventory. Responds to questions regarding ingredients and packaging and helps identify items.

  • Compares inventories to office records or computes figures from records such as sales orders, production records, or purchase invoices to obtain current inventory amount.

  • Compiles information on receipt or disbursement of raw materials or supplies, and computes inventory balance, price, and cost. Prepares reports as requested such as inventory balance, price lists, and shortages.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Preferred Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from four-year College or university; and five to ten years’ experience in purchasing for the food industry; or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, inventory records requisitions, purchase orders and bids, and production records.  Ability to write reports and business correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, or employees of the organization .

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, ratios, and volume to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

Ability to utilize computer programs such as Excel, MS Word, and accounting software in a network environment. Fundamental knowledge of perpetual inventory systems.
